{"id":391,"date":"2012-12-25T22:40:40","date_gmt":"2012-12-26T06:40:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/rottendanish.com\/?p=391"},"modified":"2012-12-25T22:40:40","modified_gmt":"2012-12-26T06:40:40","slug":"dont-get-me-started-no-wait-do","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/rottendanish.com\/?p=391","title":{"rendered":"Don&#8217;t get me started&#8230; No, wait&#8230; do!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Behold these two straightforward English sentences describing a\u00a0system status:<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Maintenance &#8211; started at 9:30\u2026&#8221;<br \/>\nand<br \/>\n&#8220;A problem &#8211; started at 9:30\u2026&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Nothing seemingly &#8220;wrong&#8221; there&#8230; And yet there is a hidden issue which became apparent once the Danish translation surfaced.<\/p>\n<p>You see the two English &#8220;started&#8221;-words are not 100% the same and the difference is best seen when switching to past tense: while we can say both &#8220;Maintenance &#8211; WAS started at 9:00&#8221; and &#8220;Maintenance &#8211; HAS started at 9:00&#8221;, the same symmetry does not apply to &#8220;an Error&#8221;: we can NOT say in English &#8220;Error &#8211; WAS Started at 9:00&#8221;, we can only say &#8220;Error &#8211; HAS started at 9:00&#8221;. This has to do with the strange nature of an error, we can not say about it that it actively\u00a0&#8220;was started&#8221; (here &#8220;started&#8221; is practically an adverb, describing &#8220;was&#8221;). An error will typically occur by itself and we can just note a time <strong>when it has started<\/strong>\u00a0(this &#8220;started&#8221; is a verb, past tense).<\/p>\n<p>In Danish the difference between the two meanings is more visible, as the various cases actually get different word-endings:<\/p>\n<p>English ==&gt; Danish:<br \/>\nwas started\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0==&gt; blev startet, startedes<br \/>\nhas started\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0==&gt; har startet<br \/>\nstarted (verb)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 ==&gt; startede<br \/>\nstarted (adverb)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 ==&gt; startet<\/p>\n<p>So, in Danish we can <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">not<\/span> use the (original)\u00a0translation-pair:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Wrong Danish:<\/strong><br \/>\n&#8220;Vedligeholdelse &#8211; startet kl. 9.00&#8230;&#8221;<br \/>\n&#8220;En fejl &#8211; startet kl. 9.00&#8230;&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The correct translation is:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Correct Danish:<\/strong><br \/>\n&#8220;Vedligeholdelse &#8211;
